The first Adidas Samba was released as an indoor
football shoe in the 1950s.
This year, the brand has has launched the same samba, this time with a twist.
To bring the relaunch to the African soil, the
company solicited the help of South Africa’s photographer and visual artist
Trevor Stuurman. The campaign tagged ‘This Is Our Territory’ featured
photographer Uno Gondo and digital curator Lindiwe Ngubeni.
The campaign draws inspiration from South Africa
grassroots soccer culture.
“We decided
to use the iconic handwoven Kente cloth from Ghana as a backdrop as it
represents time, technical skill and heritage. We felt that similar to fabric,
soccer brings people together in an authentic and celebratory manner. It was
also so important for me to personally bring it back home to Africa and to
celebrate our collective culture,” says Stuurman.
