Inspired by the adage ‘Sound mind in a sound body’ and the Olympic fever that took a hold of London and the world at large for the past three weeks, our annual music issue is aptly titled The Sound Issue.
The covers bring Lagos and London sound together with Trybes Records’ First Lady and Nigeria’s hottest new female MC Eva Alordiah and UK’s soundest urban act Skepta gracing the female and male covers respectively. Inside we bring you exclusive shoots and interviews with these young Nigerian stars of music.
But beyond Eva and Skepta, there are many more sound reads in between our two covers. We sit down to chat with some stellar names of African music from South Africa’s DJ Black Coffee to Nigeria’s Emmanuel Cobhams Asuquo to UK’s fresh talent Angel and America’s golden sound Santigold. In the musical vein, we also have a look at the rising talents of British music.
Music is not all though as the 200+ page Sound Issue also brings us sound stories. We document model Samira Hashi’s journey to her homeland Somalia recently documented on BBC3, speak exclusively to CNN 2009 Global Hero Betty Makoni and recount Olympic tales of gold and glory with Nigerian former Olympian Sanusi Turay.
In fashion we spotlight Nigerian designer and fashion editor Mai Atafo and stellar South African stylist Pholoso Selebogo. Our global travellers strike a pose for Hakeem Salaam on the beaches of Cape Town while sartorial stylistas takes to the rooftops of New York in our most colourful menswear shoot to date.
As we’re all about sound minds and sound bodies this season, Team FAB check out fun ways to keep fit while our editor Sinem takes a weekend break in Tunisia now soundly back on the tourist trail. Further afield Mifone’s Nikhil Patel gives us a glimpse of his fab travels around the world and Save the Congo’s Vava Tampa gives us the lowdown on Kinshasa.
On sale in 8 countries around the world and available digitally on Android and Apple platforms and via www.pocketmags.com , FAB Issue 9 is sure to make a sound summer read.
